Home Health Aide of the Year 2008
Veronica Snickety-Snowden

For many elderly people, the availability of someone to help them with their personal care and homemaking chores can mean the difference between continuing to live safely in their home and having to move in with family or into a nursing home.  SAGE HomeCare was founded on this premise back in 1954 and has been providing quality care through their professional staff and team of Certified Home Health Aides ever since.

One of these Aides is Veronica Sackitey-Snowden, who was recently named 2008 Home Health Aide of the Year.  Veronica has been with SAGE since May of 2000, when a friend referred her to the program. Veronica’s first client was a 105 year old Summit resident whom she lived with and took care of for nearly two and a half years.  Veronica’s first client lived to be 107 years old…now that’s care!

“I have so many fond memories of this very loving, patient and kind person who became more like a grandmother to me,”   explains Veronica.  “In the early years, we would go to church together and then I would accompany her every Sunday to a champagne brunch with her friends. My client had also been a SAGE volunteer in her younger years, so we always had a lot to talk about.”

Marianne Kranz, the original Shopping Coordinator of the Shopping Service Program when it began in 1998, also reminds us that this client, who lived in the most remote part of Summit, also used SAGE’s Shopping Service. “It got to the point where Marguerite Stewart, who quickly became the Shopping Coordinator of the recently-established service, and I would be watching out for Veronica who was watching out for the client,” explains Marianne.  “When we picked up lists and shopped for the client, we’d also try to pick up some groceries for Veronica and leave the bags in the garage for her.”

Since the passing of her first client, Veronica has been a live-in aide with other local seniors in Westfield, Chatham and most recently in Maplewood.  Veronica was taking care of an elderly couple for the past four and a half years, working seven days a week. Unfortunately, the couple passed away within one year of each other, both after very long illnesses.

According to Ellisa Lee, HomeCare Director of Nursing, “Veronica is conscientious, caring, competent, lovely and patient.  She has begun to have the same positive impact with her new clients that she has had with her former clients during the past nine years. We have already received many comments regarding her kind manner and professional care.”

  • Veronica first arrived in the United States in 1999.  She originally settled in Atlanta with an American family she had been babysitting for in Ghana for eight years. Veronica returns to her native Ghana at least once a year to visit her parents, siblings and twenty-four year old son. She enjoys visits to New York City and travels down to Maryland to see her cousin.

“I miss the warm weather in my country, but,” Veronica adds, “I love America because if you work hard in this country, you can become whatever you want to become.”
