SAGE Eldercare is offering a free, 8 week bereavement support group beginning September 19, for people age 60 and older who have lost a spouse in the last year. The group meets on Sept 19, 26, Oct 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and Nov 7, 2:00 – 3:00 pm. Attendees must register. Please call 908-598-5509 or email klarkin@sageeldercare.org.

The support group will be led by Kathy Larkin, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and SAGE’s InfoCare Manager. “Adjusting to the loss of a spouse is a life-changing event and an ongoing process. During the first year, the world can feel like a different place to the one who is grieving. At this time, it can be helpful to be with others who are on a similar road to share concerns, coping strategies, and fellowship as you move forward,” said Larkin.

Community Education  SAGE hosts programs and events to help educate and provide resources for local residents.  Outside professionals are often brought in to discuss topics that are relevant to older adults, their families, and caregivers.

Exercise Classes  SAGE’s exercise classes, including Fun-to-be-Fit, Gentle Chair Yoga, and Tai Chi, are open to anyone 60 years of age and older. The exercise programs are open to the public and are designed with a gentle approach for all fitness levels to improve strength, flexibility, and overall conditioning in an effort to prevent falls.

Support Groups  SAGE hosts free caregiver support groups that are open to the public. Led by SAGE’s Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in eldercare, the groups offer opportunities for discussion about topics including the challenges and trials of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, balancing work and caregiving, long-distance caregiving, navigating the healthcare system, coping with caregiver emotions and managing stress, and defining caregiver roles. Groups specifically for spouses that are caregivers or for adult children who are caregivers meet frequently.
