AARP Tax Assistance
Thursday, February 14, 9:00 am -- 12:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 9:00am on Thursday, repeating until 04/11/2019
Free tax counseling and preparation for middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those who are 60 years of age and older, is available at SAGE Eldercare, located at 290 Broad Street in Summit, on Thursdays from February 7 through April 11, 2019, from 9 am to 12 pm. Dates include: February 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28, April 4 and 11. During the ten-week program, SAGE will host IRS-trained volunteer tax preparers from AARP.
The assistance is provided by AARP as part of a national Tax-Aide program through its foundation in conjunction with the IRS. Area residents in Essex, Morris, Somerset, and Union Counties do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use the service.
This is a confidential service and preparation is by appointment only. To avoid end of tax season rush, earlier appointments are encouraged. For more information and to schedule an appointment, please call SAGE at 908.598.5509.
Taxpayers should bring a copy of their 2017 Federal and State income tax returns; 2018 income tax packets; 2018 real estate tax bills; Federal information forms for 2018 (W-2 forms; SSA-1099 form; 1099s for interest, dividends and other income; 1099 for pension, annuity and IRA distribution; 1099-B forms for assets sold during the year); receipts or cancelled checks if itemizing deductions; Social Security numbers for dependents; and, a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport.
Community Education SAGE hosts programs and events to help educate and provide resources for local residents. Outside professionals are often brought in to discuss topics that are relevant to older adults, their families, and caregivers.
Exercise Classes SAGE’s exercise classes, including Fun-to-be-Fit, Gentle Chair Yoga, and Tai Chi, are open to anyone 60 years of age and older. The exercise programs are open to the public and are designed with a gentle approach for all fitness levels to improve strength, flexibility, and overall conditioning in an effort to prevent falls.
Support Groups SAGE hosts free caregiver support groups that are open to the public. Led by SAGE’s Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in eldercare, the groups offer opportunities for discussion about topics including the challenges and trials of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, balancing work and caregiving, long-distance caregiving, navigating the healthcare system, coping with caregiver emotions and managing stress, and defining caregiver roles. Groups specifically for spouses that are caregivers or for adult children who are caregivers meet frequently.
